What VARC preparation needs
VARC preparation depends on careful reading, argument structure, option evaluation, and consistency. Reading more can help, but improvement becomes easier to diagnose when passage practice and verbal questions are reviewed with specific reasons for each decision.
Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension topic checklist
Use these topic groups to organise study and revision. Names vary between preparation sources, and questions can combine more than one concept.
- Reading Comprehension
- Para Jumbles
- Para Summary
- Odd One Out
- Critical Reasoning
- Vocabulary
- Grammar
Build the foundation in a useful order
- Build a regular reading habit across unfamiliar subjects while summarising the central claim, structure, and tone.
- Practise Reading Comprehension without relying on memory of the passage; return to the relevant evidence when evaluating options.
- Learn to identify paragraph roles, logical flow, and transitions for para jumbles, summaries, and odd-one-out questions.
- Use vocabulary and grammar study to support comprehension, not as a replacement for passage and question practice.
How to practise VARC
Review every attractive wrong option
Write down why an option looked plausible and what word, assumption, or scope problem made it wrong.
Track passage type carefully
Difficulty may come from subject familiarity, dense structure, abstract argument, or weak attention—not one universal RC weakness.
Practise selection
Use sectionals to learn which passages or verbal questions deserve early attention and which should wait.
Avoid speed-only reading
Faster reading is not useful when structure and argument are lost. Improve comprehension efficiency rather than raw word speed.
Questions for the weekly review
- Were RC errors caused by passage understanding or option evaluation?
- Which passage subjects or writing styles created the most friction?
- Did verbal practice include review of the full paragraph structure?
- Was VARC practised on enough separate days to build continuity?
